Why Your Skin Changes in the Fall — And What to Do About It

October Skincare Guide | Face to Face Skincare in Westminster, Colorado

Have you ever noticed that the minute Colorado starts feeling like fall, your skin suddenly seems… different?

Maybe your moisturizer isn’t cutting it anymore. Your skin feels tight after cleansing, makeup isn’t sitting as smoothly, old pigmentation seems more noticeable, or you’re suddenly dealing with dry patches and breakouts at the same time.

You’re not imagining it.

Seasonal changes can have a big impact on your skin, and here in Colorado, the combination of cooler temperatures, dry air, indoor heating, and our already low humidity can make that transition especially noticeable.

The good news? October is also one of my favorite months to start working on the skin concerns that accumulated over summer.

Why Does Skin Get So Dry in the Fall?

As temperatures and humidity drop, your skin can lose moisture more easily. Then we turn on the heat indoors, which can make an already dry environment even drier.

The result can be:

  • Tight or uncomfortable skin

  • Flaking and rough texture

  • Increased sensitivity

  • Dullness

  • More noticeable fine lines

  • An impaired skin barrier

  • Breakouts caused by dehydration and irritation

One of the biggest mistakes I see this time of year is assuming that dry skin simply needs a thicker moisturizer.

Sometimes it does—but healthy fall skin is also about protecting and supporting your skin barrier.

That may mean temporarily reducing aggressive exfoliation, switching cleansers, adding hydrating or barrier-supporting ingredients, and adjusting your professional treatments.

And Then There’s the Summer Damage…

Even if you were diligent with sunscreen all summer (and I hope you were!), months of Colorado sunshine can leave behind some souvenirs we didn’t exactly ask for.

Think:

Sun spots. Uneven pigmentation. Melasma. Rough texture. Fine lines. Dullness.

This is one reason fall is often called peel season.

With less intense sun exposure and cooler weather, we can begin focusing more intentionally on resurfacing and correcting the skin.

Chemical Peels Aren’t Just About Peeling

One misconception I hear is that the goal of a chemical peel is simply to make your face peel.

It isn’t.

The goal is controlled exfoliation and skin renewal.

Depending on the peel and your skin, chemical peels can help improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation, acne, post-acne marks, texture, fine lines and overall brightness.

At Face to Face Skincare, I don’t believe every person needs the strongest peel possible.

Your treatment should depend on your skin, your goals, your tolerance and what you’ve been using at home.

Sometimes more isn’t better. Better is better.

Is October a Good Time for Microneedling?

Absolutely.

Microneedling is one of my favorite treatments when we’re looking beyond surface exfoliation and focusing on collagen stimulation.

It can be a great option for concerns such as:

  • Fine lines

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Acne scarring

  • Enlarged-looking pores

  • Overall skin rejuvenation

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers the body’s natural healing response and supports collagen and elastin production.

And here’s the important part: microneedling isn’t an instant-gratification treatment.

Your skin continues its remodeling process after your appointment, which is why a series of treatments spaced appropriately apart can be so valuable.

Starting in the fall also gives us several months to work toward healthier-looking skin before spring and summer return.

What Treatment Should You Choose?

This is where skincare gets personal.

If your biggest concern is surface pigmentation, congestion or dullness, a chemical peel may make sense.

If we’re working on texture, acne scarring, fine lines or collagen, microneedling may be the better direction.

If your skin is dry, irritated or compromised, however, your best October treatment might actually be a hydrating custom facial and barrier repair—not a peel at all.

That’s why I don’t believe in choosing treatments just because they’re trending on TikTok or Instagram.

Your skin doesn’t care what’s trending. It cares about what it needs.

Your Fall Skincare Routine Doesn’t Need 12 Steps

Before you buy an entirely new shelf of products, start with the basics:

Cleanse. Hydrate. Treat. Moisturize. Protect.

And yes—SPF is still non-negotiable in October.

Colorado UV exposure doesn’t disappear because you’re wearing a sweater.

Your home routine should support the work we’re doing in the treatment room, not fight against it. If you’re unsure whether your current products are actually right for your skin, bring them with you to your appointment. I’m always happy to take a look.
